Spinel is a unique and beautiful gem. Coming in exceptional colors, only recently has spinel come to the forefront of the gemstone industry. Spinels are found in many places around the world, with the most desired reds and pinks coming from Tanzania, Myanmar and Tajikistan. The most desired blue's come from a small mining area in Vietnam.
Since spinels have often come from areas which also produce ruby, they were both misidentified as ruby, and sold to unknowing consumers as ruby. In fact, the most famous ruby the Black Prince's Ruby, which adorns the British imperial State Crown, is a large red spinel.
